A better book than I even expected. If you are interested in technology, especially the technology of the future this book is for you. It also contains political commentary, a unique one that resonates with me and I'm sure many others of people in the early 20s demographic that grew up as part of the 'millennial generation'. Cody Wilson is doing something that I want to do, that is something truly game changing. This book goes through the whole story of this project and to be honest it almost seems like it was simpler than I imagined. It seems to me his people skills, media skills, and connections is one thing that was absolutely necessary for this project to be successful. After reading this book I'm cheering on for Cody Wilson and above all the changes to our society that are about to happen of which he is only a small portion of but a portion nonetheless that is a broader picture of people changing society to push against laws and regulations that are increasingly choking innovation and liberty.
I got this book believing that it would fill in the gaps about the story and development of the 3D printed gun that were missing from media accounts, it doesn't. The story he tells is short on facts and long on descriptions of his mood, the setting of an office or other people he meets. I didn't expect a history books but he fails to give out key dates on when certain events happened. The chapter "Redacted" is a lot the chapter blacked out but he gives no explanation in to why the chapter is like that. Was the chapter purposely redacted because of government input, the publisher or was it done just for effect? He uses a lot a big words that found me breaking open a dictionary almost every other page in the book which does not help with the continuity of the story.
I was happy to find that this isn’t a manifesto; it’s the story behind how Defense Distributed, the Liberator pistol, and the Ghost Gunner came to be. Helps flesh out the story that wasn't known to the public previously, when all anyone had to go on was Cody’s interviews.
The thought processes of the man and challenges with corporate control of the printers were surprising to me. Good read, educational, freedom has to be taken as it is suppressed at every opportunity.
Do not hesitate to purchase this excellent book. Cody Wilson chronicles the extraordinary length to which the United States government has gone to sabotage his campaign to free the common man from the oppressive and tyrannical grip of the modern state.
Cody Wilson describes the story of how the Liberator came to be. It brings the reader from rural Texas to grungy European hackerspaces. Even if you don't agree with the politics, seeing things from Cody Wilson's point of view is very interesting and may change your view on some things, or at least help you understand the argument for Wilson's philosophy.Sometimes, at least for me, the flow of the book seemed a bit rugged, and some of the word choice seemed a bit forced, but overall I recommend it to anyone interested in the 3D-printed gun debate.
It's easy to pick nits or slag Cody Wilson for the book that he didn't write. Perhaps you wanted a straight-up polemic or a granular media dissection? Fair enough. This isn't that. It's better. It's a surefooted memoir that captures a significant moment in postmodern history with studious, atmospheric, suspenseful, and at times even prose-poetic, flair. The ideas and incisive political observations are woven in for those who care to notice. And the techno drama is there for those who come for nothing less. Anyway, I found it riveting -- one of the best books I've read this year, and I've read a lot of books this year.
Cody's an American hero.
